The time-course of processing syntactic dependencies: Evidence from eye movements
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current study used headmounted eyetracking to examine the time course and nature of processing filler-gap relations in WH-questions, and the role of verb argument frame information. Subjects listened to a short narrative while viewing pictures of entities mentioned in the story. At the end of the story, they were required to answer an auditorily presented question; eye movements in response to these questions were recorded. Subjects heard WH-questions such as ‘‘What did Jody squash the spider with?’’ contrasted with yes/no question questions with no gap (e.g., ‘‘Did Jody squash a spider with her shoe?’’). Results showed that subjects anticipate a gap site at the verb only for Wh-questions. These results provide converging evidence for active on-line resolution of syntactic dependencies and introduce an important methodological tool for investigating processes that underlie syntactic dependencies.

متن کاملEye-Tracking Method’ Usage for Understanding the Cognitive Processes in Multimedia Learning
Introduction: Designing multimedia learning environments should consist of the evidence-based study and principals about the human learning process. Eye tracking is a way based on the learner processing of learning materials which presented in multimedia learning environments. The aim of the study was to examine the use of the eye-tracking method to investigate the cognitive processes in m...
متن کاملEye movements and lexical access in spoken-language comprehension: evaluating a linking hypothesis between fixations and linguistic processing.
A growing number of researchers in the sentence processing community are using eye movements to address issues in spoken language comprehension. Experiments using this paradigm have shown that visually presented referential information, including properties of referents relevant to specific actions, influences even the earliest moments of syntactic processing. Methodological concerns about task...
متن کاملReaders' eye movements distinguish anomalies of form and content.
Evidence is presented that eye-movement patterns during reading distinguish costs associated with the syntactic processing of sentences from costs associated with relating sentence meaning to real world probabilities. Participants (N = 30) read matching sets of sentences that differed by a single word, making the sentence syntactically anomalous (but understandable), pragmatically anomalous, or...
متن کاملChildren’s Eye Movements during Listening: Developmental Evidence for a Constraint-Based Theory of Sentence Processing
Many comprehension studies of grammatical development have focused on the ultimate interpretation that children assign to sentences and phrases, yielding somewhat static snapshots of children's emerging grammatical knowledge. Studies of the dynamic processes underlying children's language comprehension have to date been rare, owing in part to the lack of online sentence processing techniques su...
